At the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Super Bowl Boot Parade, quarterback Tom Brady caused the big shock of the day as he tossed the Vince Lombardi Trophy across the water from boat to boat. That made waves days later – now Brady spoke up about the incident.
Brady had caused laughter on social media when he left the festivities visibly drunk – but it was the now infamous throwing of the trophy over the water that dominated the headlines.
Brady himself “doesn’t remember the incident very well,” admitted Brady on James Corden’s Late, Late Show.
“I wasn’t thinking at the moment,” said Brady with a laugh, “I didn’t think about it. It was more like this: That should be fun.”
Only later did he find out that the trophy would have sunk around 24 meters if Tight End Cam Brate had not safely snapped shut on the other boat. Accordingly, he was “very happy” that Brate caught the litter safely.
As a result of the incident, Lorraine Grohs, daughter of Greg Grohs, who designed the first Vince Lombardi Trophy in the service of Tiffany & Co., asked for an apology. Brady “treated the trophy with respect and undignified”.
ESPN reports that the Buccaneers would have commissioned a replacement if the trophy had landed in the sea.
