Can the eruption of La Palma wake up other volcanoes?

It seems that the concern around the volcanic eruption in the Cumbre Vieja area on the island of La Palma is increasing. In the last hours a new mouth of the volcano has emerged but also, some believe that this eruption could lead to others being reproduced in the rest of the Canary Islands, so the question arises : Can the eruption of La Palma wake up others? volcanoes of the Canary Islands? In particular, Teide, could it also have an eruption?

Can the eruption of La Palma wake up other volcanoes?

Many are the people who in the last hours wonder if there is the possibility of other volcanic “awakenings” after the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja in La Palma. Especially, the focus has been on Mount Teide in Tenerife, the most famous of the Spanish volcanoes .

However, experts rule out this possibility . At the moment they have no indications that another eruption is going to take place in the rest of the volcanoes on the island of La Palma and as for Mount Teide , it has long been considered a volcano that must be watched since there is a risk of eruption although no one can predict when it could happen.

What is certain is that the Cumbre Vieja now active could continue like this for several weeks and even months . The area of this volcano is the most active and in the days prior to its eruption a series of seismic tremors of various levels occurred, something that for the moment has not happened in the rest of the islands.

Mount Teide in the spotlight

In any case, Teide is, as we say, the volcano that is most talked about after what happened on La Palma. We cannot forget that Tenerife was formed from the volcanic activity produced in the area for centuries and that also, Mount Teide is not the only volcano on the island. On the other hand, it is a polygenic type volcano, this means that it has had several eruptions with which it has grown.

In the event that it erupts, it would be quite dangerous, mainly because of the population that lives near Teide, and that would have to be evacuated as a matter of urgency, as has happened now in Cumbre Vieja. On the other hand, such an eruption could happen in two ways: through violent and explosive processes (that is, with lava jumping through the air at high altitude) or through effusive processes, so that it would look like lava emerges without it there is no explosion. Precisely the latter was what happened in 1909 with the Chinyero volcano, which is near Mount Teide.

We can say then that the experts do not believe that the eruption in Cumbre Vieja means that the other volcanoes on La Palma go through the same process, while the Teide de Tenerife has not shown any signs of activity at the moment, despite the fact that it always It has been (and continues to be) part of the list that scientists have on volcanoes that should be closely monitored and in the case of Europe, the volcanoes of Vesuvius and Campi Flegrei (in Italy) are in their sights , Santorini (in Greece) and of course, Teide.
