Venice – The actor Christoph Waltz does not believe in letting himself go. “I firmly believe… no, I not only firmly believe, I am more than 100 percent convinced that discipline is the beginning of everything,” said the 65-year-old in Venice on Tuesday. “Discipline in thought, discipline in action, and you know what? Discipline in expressing your feelings.”
The two-time Academy Award winner stars in Walter Hill’s new film Dead for a Dollar, which premieres at the Venice Film Festival on Tuesday, alongside Willem Dafoe and Rachel Brosnahan.
Discipline would be perceived as old-fashioned, Waltz said. “I don’t think it’s old school. I think it’s the basis of our discourse, our everyday way of communicating with each other. And why should it be any different on a film set? The idea that a film set is there to make us feel good is preposterous – to say the least.”
Director Hill is of the same opinion. It was “absolutely fantastic,” but discipline is sometimes a challenge, Waltz said. “It’s not always about how we feel, but sometimes also about what we have to do.” dpa
