Despite high vaccination rates, Spain and Portugal still have too many new corona infections. The federal states want to counteract this trend with vaccination approval for five to eleven year olds.
Madrid – In Spain and Portugal, the competent authorities have approved vaccination of five to eleven year olds against Covid-19. The health ministries in Madrid and Lisbon announced on Tuesday.
This means that both countries can further increase their vaccination rates, which are very good compared to other European countries. At the end of November, the European Medicines Agency Ema gave the green light for the approval of the corona vaccine from the manufacturer Pfizer / Biontech for children aged five and over in Europe.
High vaccination rates in both countries
Spain currently has a vaccination rate of around 80 percent. Almost 90 percent of all citizens over the age of twelve are already fully vaccinated in the country. According to media estimates, around three million children can now be vaccinated there after the latest decision. Portugal even has a vaccination rate of around 88 percent. The authorities announced in Lisbon that almost 638,000 children could now also be given the corona vaccination.
Regardless of the high vaccination rates, an increase in the seven-day incidence has also been recorded in Spain and Portugal for a few weeks. From the 2021 low of around 18 in mid-October, the value in Spain last climbed to 139. In Portugal, the incidence rose from around 100 in mid-November to 228 now. Both are still significantly better off than many other European countries. In Germany, the incidence on Tuesday was 432. dpa
