After the gruesome murder of a 17-year-old, there has been criticism of Iran’s judicial system. In the case of so-called “honor killings”, the punishment is often milder.
Tehran – A brutal murder has caused horror in Iran and criticism of the country’s judicial system. After a man killed his wife, the question of how to classify the crime now arises. The concept of so-called “honor killing” is criticized and questioned.
The man killed his wife over the weekend in Ahwas, southwestern Iran. He beheaded the woman, who was only 17 years old, as reported by the ISNA news agency, among others. After that, he walked into the street with her head in his hand. The man is now caught.
Iran: Arrested after gruesome murder
On Thursday (February 10, 2022), the Iranian public prosecutor announced that both the man and his brother had been arrested. According to the authorities, the two will soon be brought before a court. Observers are now wondering what the charges against the husband and his brother will be. A separate legal framework still applies to “honor killing” in Iran.

The death penalty is commonly used for murder in Iran. When family members are murdered in the name of supposed honor, on the other hand, milder sentences are often imposed. In Iran, such murders are still classified as legitimate, both religiously and in some cases socially. Since the gruesome murder in Ahwas, however, criticism of the concept and the Iranian legal situation has become louder and louder.
Criticism of Iran’s justice system after brutal assassination
Critics are now demanding that the judiciary classify so-called “honor killings” as murder and impose the same punishment. Iran’s chief prosecutor, Mohammed Jafar Montaseri, did not give a clear answer to the classification of the weekend’s crime. According to him, the Internet and social media are the cause of such acts. It therefore remains to be seen which charges the public prosecutor will decide on.
Iran is also a topic on Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock’s current trip to the Middle East. In Israel, she took a position on the conflict between the two states. (vbu/dpa)
