Beware of possible landslides caused by rain and storm surges: the Japanese weather agency has issued a special warning.

TOKYO – An unusually violent typhoon threatens parts of Japan with strong gusts of wind and rain. The Japanese weather agency issued a special warning for Kagoshima Prefecture on the southwestern main island of Kyushu on Saturday.

She called on residents to exercise extreme caution against possible landslides caused by rain and storm surges. The “unprecedentedly dangerous” typhoon “Nanmadol” with wind speeds of 270 kilometers per hour should therefore also cover other areas of the island kingdom with heavy rain on this holiday-related weekend.

Warnings like those for Kagoshima are only issued in Japan when an extraordinary natural event is forecast that only occurs once in decades, media reported. It is the first such warning for areas outside of southern Okinawa Prefecture.

The slow-moving, large and strong cyclone could head northeast after the weekend and also cause heavy rain on the main island of Honshu in large areas to the north, the Japanese television broadcaster NHK reported on Saturday. dpa
