Dice Heroes game: hunt bad guys and collect coins

With a simple principle, “Cube Heroes” is a family game to cheer for.

How the publisher describes the game: In the dice competition for the kingdom of Therion: Slip into the role of a dice hero and, with your group, seize the villains who are up to mischief in the kingdom. Use the luck of the dice to secure the rewards or find valuable treasures. With courage and the favor of the dice, you will succeed in claiming glory and honor in the name of Therion. A game for big heroes and little companions.

Review by Hunter and Melli: When you think of dice games, the first thing that certainly comes to mind is the well-tried classic Kniffel. However, it is easy to overlook the fact that there are now countless new variants of this game principle, in which the aim is to achieve the highest number of points by throwing dice several times and skilfully sorting out the best results. The American author Richard Garfield has already created something like a modern classic with “King of Tokyo”, in which we throw one on the other’s monster hat with our dice.

Now Richard Garfield is back with Dice Heroes, a family-friendly dice game. This time we play brave heroes who go on a hunt for villains and stolen coins. At the end, whoever has collected the most coins through rewards for captured villains or dice results wins. The basic principle remains the same. On your turn, you roll the dice up to three times and in between you can put individual dice aside for the final result.

In the beginning you only roll three white dice, but certain dice results can give you additional yellow and red dice. These are more powerful, but can also be lost again due to missing pages. Our main goal is to roll as many swords as possible. At the end of our turn we place this next to the profile of the current villain.

Now it is the next player’s turn and tries to surpass our number of swords. Only if none of the players succeed in throwing a higher number of swords do you get the wanted poster, which is worth a certain number of coins at the end and the next villain is revealed. Alternatively, you can also try to roll coins directly. This is a good alternative, for example, if you can only beat the last throw of a fellow player with a lot of luck.

“Würfelhelden” combines an exciting, family-friendly theme with the simple but very effective trick of having to outbid the previous player with every throw. Every new throw becomes an intense competition, everyone cheers and the excitement increases with each result, whether someone succeeds in achieving an even more powerful throw.

With the additional dice, which strengthen us for a certain time, the results also get better and better, until bad luck strikes again and the additional dice are lost due to misses. That’s why tactical skill is required for “Würfelhelden”. When are the opponent(s) weak and when is it particularly worth getting hold of a villain. And when do you rather let the players argue with each other and secretly roll a few extra coins and wait until the time is right for an attack that nobody can counter.

The pleasant playing time of only 30 minutes and the fair price make “Würfelhelden” a real recommendation for all fans of family games who like to play dice.
