Before we explore the unique benefits of WhatsApp and Telegram individually, and see how they differ, let’s discuss how they are similar. First of all, both applications have an identical approach: they seek to make communication quick and easy.
Each app comes with a mobile and web version to be able to manage our conversations on multiple devices, a functionality that users value very positively, as they constantly change between phones and tablets or computers. Additionally, both show read and delivery receipts, plus access to group messages, file sharing (1.5GB limit on Telegram vs. 16MB on WhatsApp), high-quality voice calls, and Chatbot support ( although in WhatsApp it is still in development).
Let’s now see the differences:
Privacy
WhatsApp is probably more popular but it does have privacy concerns. Due to its association with Facebook, many are discontinuing using this app. They are not sure about privacy after Facebook acquired WhatsApp providing data related to hundreds and millions of users. WhatsApp promised end-to-end encryption, but reports emerged that some Israeli companies had created spyware that was monitoring politicians and activists through this app.
Telegram, meanwhile, is a multiplatform messaging application that sends encrypted messages that self-destruct. It is its strong point. Its main features are chats and voice calls and, like the streaming function in WhatsApp, Telegram has “channels”. It also supports large groups and chats for two. The limit on each channel is 200,000 groups to be able to reach more people without compromising privacy. Channels allow an unlimited number of subscribers, which makes them a great option for broadcasting messages to large audiences. You can also open and use Telegram on multiple devices at the same time, unlike other messaging applications. By ensuring the privacy of users’ contact number, with a public username, Telegram users can chat with others in the application, even if they do not have the contact number of others.
Number of users
In this sense, WhatsApp is better than Telegram. Why? WhatsApp currently has 2 billion active users compared to Telegram’s more than 200 million monthly active users , this means that your friends and family are more likely to have WhatsApp rather than Telegram, so unless If you decide to migrate all at once in a group, you may feel a bit “disconnected”. One of the biggest disadvantages of Telegram at the moment is that it is not as well known as WhatsApp, but this situation is rapidly changing around the world. You don’t want to be left behind.
Cloud storage
At this point, Telegram is better . Telegram’s cloud storage allows you to save images, text messages, multimedia files and documents in the cloud. It also allows users to log in and out, so the backup means that restoring the app is not a cause for concern for users. Backup is not required. Regarding the use of storage, in WhatsApp you can free up space from the app itself and in Telegram you can limit the maximum space of the cache from the application itself.
Which of the two do you think has won this versus?
