Mobility will change radically in 30 years and, in addition, it will be conceived in a global way, not only focused on the development of vehicles but also on regulation, traffic systems, smart roads, recharging points: in short, they will be the smart cities and the experience of its inhabitants which define its future.
In this transformation process, the new generations of transport designers play an important role, who, trained in transport design thinking, combine a strong methodological base, technical knowledge and high doses of creativity to promote innovation in the sector. And a key competency that these professionals must possess is their ability to interpret the needs and expectations of users.
If you want to be a designer and contribute to the mobility of the future, keep in mind that, in Spain, the IED Barcelona Escuela Superior de Diseño is the only center that offers the Higher Degree in Transport Design. In a four-year itinerary he not only trained in the latest techniques and technologies related to the design and styling of all types of vehicles, but also in the global solutions of the sector, including systems and accessories.
The program does not stay in theory. On the contrary, one of its strengths is the development of real projects and collaboration with relevant companies in the sector. Throughout its successive editions, students develop very diverse design projects: boats, cars, motorcycles, drones, trains …
A good example is the final year project of the last promotion. Its objective? Define the Lamborghini of 2035. The result of the experience was proposals for sports cars that incorporate parametric fabrics to connect with the emotional state of the driver, or that circulate through the dunes of Dubai, that break gender stereotypes or have engines of plasma, among others.
Another recent project, closely connected with the new X-ray of Smart Cities, is Toyota We. Its objective is to respond to the progressive aging of the population and its concentration in large cities, and the need to create more inclusive cities that truly belong to all its inhabitants. The proposal, in which Transport Design students have participated together with Graphic Design and Product Design students, has two parts: a device designed for the domestic environment and a shared use platform for the urban environment.
A third transportation project is Two Wheels, around motorcycle design. Third year students have explored the possibilities of this means of transport beyond aspects such as bodywork or materials. Among the designs presented are sports or vintage inspiration combined with the electric motor, a fully customizable scooter thanks to a parts acquisition and change service managed via app or a motorcycle that incorporates a photocatalytic varnish on its surfaces to help improve quality from air.
There are other IED Barcelona courses that are also investigating in the field of transport in large cities and collaborating with entrepreneurs in the sector. For example, the Master in Design Management and the Postgraduate in Design for Innovation Strategy, which collaborate with a car sharing startup for electric cars with the aim of detecting possible use cases in the metropolitan area of Barcelona. Design Management students are, in turn, collaborating with a sports automotive brand to propose connectivity solutions that enhance the driving experience.
So now you know, if you are interested in transportation design and the future of cities, this is the training you need: Higher Degree in Transportation Design from IED Barcelona Higher School of Design.
