Documentary about Otto Rehhagel and his greatest triumph

“King Otto” was considered a blatant outsider. A documentary tells the story of the rise of football legend Otto Rehagel.

Essen – Greece wrote football history by winning the European Championship in 2004: Who would have thought the blatant underdog would even advance to the finals of the tournament in Portugal? Probably nobody.

The architect of the success was a German, to whom they then built a memorial in Greece: Otto Rehhagel. More than 17 years after the longstanding Bundesliga coach’s greatest triumph, a documentary about the sensational coup is now coming to the cinemas.

“King Otto” traces the 83-year-old’s path from being a skeptical national coach to becoming a coach at Olympus. Rehhagel himself gives an insight into his world of emotions and thoughts at the time and reveals why he did not want to train the German team after the success.

King Otto, cinema release on November 10th, Greece, USA, Great Britain 2021, 82 min., By Christopher André Marks, with Otto Rehhagel, Ioannis Topalidis, Traianos Dellas and others dpa
