In a study recently published in the Journal of Psychophysiology , a team of researchers from the universities of California, Davis, and Arizona, has shown that simultaneous physiological phenomena occur in lovers. To demonstrate this, they conducted an experiment with couples whose members were romantically involved. The instructions were simple: the two people had to sit relaxed and wait for their temperature, blood pressure and other vital signs to be measured. Afterwards, the same variables were evaluated by mixing the volunteers, so that they did not coincide with their partner. The result was that at least two of those measures tended to match , but only when the two sides of the duo had a love bond. For example, it did not happen if it was two strangers located close to each other.
According to these experts, the first thing that begins to work at the same time is the respiratory rate, that is, the inhalation and exhalation time is similar. The same is true of heart rate, which, in essence, supports the popular belief that hearts beat together when linked by loving ties.
The psychologist Emilio Ferrer, who has participated in the study, indicates that there are adaptive reasons that explain the accommodation of physiological variables. Life as a couple requires that two individuals synchronize as much as possible in rhythms of life, goals, leisure, hobbies, periods of sleep, food … That the heart beats at the same time could be understood as a basis for finding ways to improve the life in common.
