Custodia García Jiménez and his colleagues have identified that while normal sugar levels do not cause any effect, when they are excessively high they induce changes in the protein b-catenin that promote cell proliferation in tumor cells of the small intestine, breast, ovary, pancreas, colon etc ? The results surprised us because they imply that the metabolic changes promoted by diet have a direct impact on the risk of cancer ,? explains García-Jiménez. "Diet is one of the easiest and cheapest forms of prevention that can save a lot of suffering and money for the National Health System," he adds. One in three cancers could be prevented by modifying diet and lifestyle.
The news is positive considering that the data from the World Health Organization (WHO) for Spain are devastating: one in six children suffers from childhood obesity, which is one of the highest rates in Europe.
