Donald Trump: US city wants to collect debts and sends debt collection companies

An old story catches up with Donald Trump: The city of Albuquerque wants to have a bill from the 2019 election campaign collected by a debt collection company.

A story that Donald Trump has long forgotten is catching up with the former US President: In September 2019 – at that time as US President – Trump visited the city of Albuquerque in the US state of New Mexico. He held an event there that paralyzed the town hall and parts of the city center. The city of Albuquerque then sent a bill for more than US $ 200,000 to Donald Trump’s campaign team for police operations, road closures and paid time off for employees who were unable to work for two days because of the Trump visit.

More than 18 months later, the bill has still not been paid, as the city’s mayor, Tim Keller, recently stated on the popular “The Daily Show” on US television. “We treated them like all other debts,” emphasized Keller to the local US television station KOB4. The invoice goes through a process in which letters are first sent. “We have not received any reply to these letters,” said Keller. In the next step, the invoice was passed on to a debt collection company. “Trump should now get these annoying voicemails,” said Keller in the “Daily Show”.

Donald Trump: City of Albuquerque wants to collect debt

This is a completely normal process for Albuquerque: 2,517 city invoices are currently with debt collection companies, city spokeswoman Lorena Sanchez told the “Albuquerque Journal”. The latest step by the debt collector: The bill was sent to a different postal address – instead of New York, it was now sent to the golf resort Mar-A-Lago in Florida, which is owned by Donald Trump and also the current residence of the ex-president.

Albuquerque is not the only city in the US that has tried in vain to collect money from Donald Trump that he owed after election campaign events. Last year, the nonprofit news organization Center for Public Integrity reported that unpaid bills from the Trump election campaign had accumulated in at least 14 cities across the country – a total of $ 1.82 million in debt.

Donald Trump debt: Albuquerque hopes for debt collection companies

There is likely to be further debts from the Trump election campaign that have not yet been included in this calculation. For example, the bill of almost $ 140,000 that Bernalillo County wrote after Trump campaigned in 2019. She was never paid, a spokesman told the Albuquerque Journal. The county has now written off the money.

The city of Albuquerque, on the other hand, is completely different: It still hopes that Donald Trump will pay off the debts from his election campaign. The money – should it be repaid at some point – should flow into a fund that will be used for the operation of the city, the police and the fire department, said Mayor Keller. (Tanja Banner)
