Donald Trump’s legal team calls for an independent investigation into the FBI raid. Joe Biden, on the other hand, finds clear words for the attacks.
Mar-a-lago – Lawyers for former US President Donald Trump have once again criticized the search of the Republican’s home and called for an independent review of the documents seized. In a filed court document, Trump’s legal team called the FBI raid on Mar-a-Lago, Florida, “unprecedented, unnecessary and legally baseless.”
The lawyers also reiterated in the court document their request that a court should appoint a so-called Special Master, an independent examiner to examine the documents seized by the FBI and determine which documents must be returned to Trump. A court hearing is scheduled for Thursday (September 1).
Donald Trump: Lawyers criticize FBI again
Trump’s legal team responded by requesting a court document Tuesday (September 30) in which the US Department of Justice detailed the reasons for the luxury home’s search. According to the report, Trump “probably” “hid” classified documents in Mar-a-Lago in order to hinder FBI investigations into possible violations of legal requirements for the storage of classified documents.
The Justice Department also submitted a photograph showing a number of documents labeled “Secret” or “Top Secret” lying on a carpet. Trump’s lawyers criticized the photo, saying it was “unnecessary” to include a photograph of alleged classified documents that had been taken out of a box and spread on the floor for “dramatic effect”.
Trump may have violated espionage laws
Trump is suspected of violating an espionage law. It contains strict guidelines for the retention of national security documents. US Presidents are required to hand over all official documents, including emails and letters, to the National Archives upon leaving office.
The raid on Trump on August 8 had led to fierce political disputes in the United States. Trump repeatedly described the search of his villa as politically motivated and spoke of a “witch hunt”. He accuses President Joe Biden’s Democrats of using the judiciary to prevent him from running for president again in 2024. (mse/afp)
