Donald Trump's Family: Romantic Relationships with Secret Service Agents

A new book reveals the relationships members of the Trump family have had with their security guards.

USA – The Trumps and the Secret Service – a little over four year relationship that has produced scandals, legends and much more. Former Vice President Mike Pence once brought the security staff of the highest government officials into luxury hotels of his boss Donald Trump on his travels. Another time, Ivanka Trump and her husband Jared Kushner made the headlines for banning their bodyguards from using one of their toilets.

A new book now deals with the relationship that Donald’s youngest daughter Tiffany Trump and her ex-sister-in-law Vanessa Trump are said to have had with their bodyguards. It was written by Carol Leonnig. It is titled “Zero Fail: The Rise and Fall of the Secret Service”. The Guardian received an advance copy from which the British newspaper now reports.

Trump Family and the Secret Service: Romantic Relationships with the Agents

In her book, the two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist describes the relationship that both Tiffany and Vanessa are said to have had with their bodyguards. Vanessa Trump was married to Donald Trump Jr. from 2005 to 2018. The 43-year-old actress has five children with the eldest son of the elected president. She filed for divorce in March 2018.

Both women are said to have had romantic relationships with Secret Service agents. Vanessa had met several times with an agent, but because he was no longer tasked with protecting her at the time, he was spared disciplinary measures. Tiffany is said to have “spent an unusually long time alone with a Secret Service agent” after breaking up with her boyfriend. The management staff is said to have been “concerned” about the “close relationship between Tiffany Trump and the agent”. The man was immediately transferred.

The members of the Secret Service are strictly prohibited from establishing relationships with their wards. This is to avoid errors or misjudgments. The chance was much higher during the Trump administration than in the previous ones. Compared to the Obama administration, the security spending of the Secret Service doubled under Donald Trump. This was partly due to the sheer size of the Trump family. In addition to Ivanka, Tiffany and Donald Jr., Eric Trump and Barron Trump also had to be protected, as well as Trump’s wife, First Lady Melania Trump. In addition there was the high willingness of the Trumps to travel. Shortly before the end of his term in office, Donald Trump quickly extended the protection of his family for another six months, which in turn cost the state hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Donald Trump doesn’t want any “fat guys” as bodyguards

As mentioned at the beginning, Donald Trump also had a very special relationship with his bodyguards. According to Leonnig, however, it was less romantic and more discriminatory. “I want these fat guys from my service,” Trump is said to have said at one point – and also expanded the thought with a rhetorical question: “How are they supposed to protect me and my family when they can’t even run down the street?”

While service has certainly gotten easier for many Secret Service agents since Joe Biden and Kamala Harris won the elections, the situation for others has not changed at all – and it will not be in the years to come. According to US law, every US president enjoys the protection of the agents for ten years after the end of his term of office. Donald Trump can therefore rely on the protection of the state bodyguards until 2031. In the event of another election victory, the period would of course be extended. (Daniel Dillmann)
