Heavy rain and flooding in Yemen over the weekend: At least eight people died.

At least eight people have died in flooding after heavy rains in Yemen. In the province of Dhamar south of the capital Sanaa, the water masses carried away, among other things, a vehicle in which six occupants died.

So said Naschwan al-Samawi, a spokesman for the local emergency services, according to a report by the Houthi rebel-controlled Saba news agency on Sunday. In Sana’a, two children died when their house partially collapsed after the rain.

There has been rain and flooding in Sana’a since Saturday. Local residents reported that traffic on several streets came to a complete standstill. The rainy season, which has repeatedly caused flooding in the impoverished country, causing injuries and deaths, usually ends in August.

A civil war has been raging in Yemen for years, triggering one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world in the country on the Arabian Peninsula. dpa
