Euro jackpot: upper limit climbs to 120 million euros

The German lottery winning record with 90 million euros has been set several times in recent years. There is a chance of a new record from 2022.

Münster – Ten years after the start of the Eurojackpot lottery, the offer has a new upper limit: From March 2022, the profit in the lottery can grow to 120 million euros. So far it has ended at 90 million euros.

For the 10th birthday in the coming year, there will be a second day of the drawing in addition to Friday and Tuesday, as Westlotto told the German Press Agency in Münster. Corresponding plans should be presented on Wednesday. Accordingly, the organizers from 18 European countries have unanimously decided on further moderate changes. So the odds in each prize class increase and the numbers drawn also change slightly. Five out of 50 remains in the drawing, but two out of 12 and no longer two out of 10 are drawn for the euro numbers (additional numbers).

The first drawing with the new rules is planned for March 25, 2022, the first on the new drawing day Tuesday will follow on March 29, 2022. The ticket prices will not change. The stake still costs 2 euros per series of bets (plus regionally different fees).

Associated with the rule changes is a different probability of winning. So far this has been 1 to 95 million for the Euro Jackpot. With the changed formula, the chance is reduced to 1: 140. This value roughly corresponds to the probability of winning the classic 6 out of 49 lottery.

Higher jackpot, more sales

With the new maximum limit of the jackpot you are exceeding “the magical limit of 100 million”, said Andreas Kötter, Chairman of the Eurojackpot cooperation and spokesman for Westlotto in Münster, the German press agency.

Kötter is certain that high jackpot lotteries with several hundred million euros quickly get into a wear and tear. “This is clearly shown by international developments. If the cooperation does not want that, the product must be carefully further developed. So we don’t make exorbitant jumps, ”he says.

But Kötter also describes how difficult it is to find the right amount: “If you ask people on the street, everyone says a million is enough. But the truth is, the higher the jackpot, the higher the sales. If the jackpot stays at 90 million euros for several weeks, however, the momentum subsides. When the jackpot exceeds certain thresholds, interest also skyrockets and dreams get bigger. “

Lottery has been running since 2012

In contrast to sports betting, the Eurojackpot is not about the tension at the moment of the sporting event. “The Eurojackpot player gives his tip and it is primarily about making a dream come true,” Kötter explains the psychology. It usually takes a certain period of time before the numbers are drawn. “That is a completely different intention than with other forms of gambling. A second drawing on Tuesday does not change anything. “

The Eurojackpot started in March 2012 with six participating countries and so far 8.8 billion euros have been distributed (as of the end of July 2021). Other countries quickly followed. Already just under a year after the start there was an initial rule change. The guaranteed jackpot distribution for the 13th drawing was no longer available. Two years later, in May 2015, the jackpot of 90 million euros was cracked for the first time. The winner came from the Czech Republic. In October 2016, a German player won the full amount for the first time. 90 million euros went to Baden-Württemberg in the Black Forest.

There were also curiosities in the history of the Eurojackpot. On December 1, 2017, the pulling device in Helsinki had a defect. The last euro number was drawn by hand under police supervision. In July 2018 there was the longest jackpot phase to date with 15 drawings. The winners from Hesse and Saxony-Anhalt shared the jackpot in the end and each received 45 million euros. In the ten-year history, five of the eight 90 million euro winnings went to Germany. dpa
