As extraordinary as it may seem, the program belonging to the Office suite is not only used to make records, numbers and accounts. Now, it has also become a competitive e-sport. So much so that the competition was held in May 2022 by the Financial Modeling World Cup (FMWC).

Why is Microsoft Excel an e-sport?

In the Excel All Star Battle competition, eight competitors battled it out for a $10,000 prize pool, but the tournament was broadcast this weekend on ESPN.

In accordance with FMWC rules, competitors were presented with different case studies that may be applicable to the real world, which players had to solve in less than 30 minutes. They were also presented with six to 15 questions, and the more complex the question, the more points were awarded.

In addition, in this competition the commentators were Bill Jelen, known as “Mr. Excel” and Oz Du Soleil, administrator of the YouTube channel “Excel on Fire”. Both are considered experts on the program, with Jelen having more than 40 books on Excel and Du Soleil having several books on the software.

The winner of the competition was Andrew Ngai, a player from the United Kingdom.

What is Excel and what can be done with this program?

Excel is the program you would use if you need to do anything related to large amounts of data or simple calculations. You can make graphs, pivot tables and even calculate budgets.
