The disaster situation remains. But the efforts of the helpers on the Brocken are successful.
Wernigerode – The major fire on the Brocken in the Harz Mountains did not spread further on Wednesday night. The Harz district announced this in the morning. It was announced on Tuesday that the fire had recently spread underground to around 160 hectares.
“Yesterday’s extinguishing operation is showing success,” said a spokesman for the district. Since 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, several firefighting helicopters and the two firefighting planes from Italy have been in use again, the spokesman said. According to this, around 380 emergency services fought the fire in the morning. The disaster situation declared by the district on Sunday remains.
The fire was discovered on Saturday on a hiking trail popular with tourists near the Goethebahnhof vantage point. The cause of the fire is still unclear. The site is sometimes difficult to access for firefighting, which is why fire-fighting planes and helicopters were mobilized. dpa
