Foundation stone laid for LGBTQ + museum in New York

The New York “Stonewall” uprisings are considered to be the birth of the LGBTQ + movement. It now has its own museum.

New York – In the presence of former professional tennis player and activist Billie Jean King, the foundation stone for a new LGBTQ + museum was laid in New York.

For the museum, which is supposed to tell the stories of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, trans people, queer people and others who feel they belong, the New York Historical Society will be expanded to include an extension that is due to open in 2024. The Historical Society, founded at the beginning of the 19th century, has dedicated itself above all to the history of the metropolis of New York.

“We are so glad that the museum has found a home,” said 77-year-old King on Tuesday. “It’s our time, for our American LGBTQ + community, to tell our stories.” The whole world will pay attention to the museum, said New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio. “People from all corners of the world will come and learn that change is possible and that it happened here in New York.”

The New York “Stonewall” riots in 1969, when revelers in the popular gay bar “Stonewall Inn” on Christopher Street in Greenwich Village in Manhattan fought against a police raid, are widely regarded as the birth of the movement. Every year around the world, parades are held to commemorate this and celebrate the self-confidence of the LGBTQ community and their resistance to discrimination. dpa
