France has decided on a milestone in terms of climate protection: what the legislative package provides.
Paris – In France, the parliament has passed a legislative package to protect the climate. Among other things, it includes the ban on numerous domestic flights. In addition, the so-called ecocide is introduced, a crime that criminalizes willful environmental destruction. President Emmanuel Macron described the result of months of negotiations as an “ecological turning point”.
However, the domestic flight ban is also causing criticism from the ranks of the opposition and environmental groups. The reason for this is that it only works if an alternative train connection of a maximum of two and a half hours is available. Connecting flights and international connections are also exempt from the ban.
France: Criticism of the domestic flight ban is loud
The new “ecocide” offense primarily provides for fines of up to four million euros. The law cites air and water pollution as examples. The French climate package also contains other aspects: it provides for a purchase bonus for electric bicycles, a weekly vegetarian menu in canteens and canteens and a ban on advertising fossil fuels such as coal.
