Free public transport would be less complicated than a 9-euro monthly ticket

The government wants to relieve citizens with the 9-euro monthly ticket for buses and trains. However, free public transport would be easier to implement and affordable.

Traveling on public buses and trains for 90 days for nine euros a month, i.e. for a total of 27 euros – the traffic light coalition’s proposal came as a surprise. With the 9-euro tickets for buses and trains, citizens should be relieved in the energy crisis. The proposal also surprised and irritated those who are supposed to implement it – the federal states, transport associations and local transport companies, as the dpa reports. Local public transport (ÖPNV) in Germany is a complicated network of tariff regulations, network boundaries, financial and regional responsibilities. How should the nationwide uniform offer be implemented? Where will the tickets be available? And who should pay for that? Many questions were initially open. The deliberations in a special conference of transport ministers from the federal and state governments lasted much longer than planned.
BuzzFeed.de* explains why the transport ministers proposed free public transport instead of a 9-euro monthly ticket and how much the measure would cost.
