Geek Pride Day or Geek Pride Day is celebrated every May 25 in commemoration of the anniversary of the premiere of the movie “Star Wars” (which took place in 1977) but Star Wars is only part of the celebration.
Friki Pride Day began in 2006 when a Spanish blogger, Germán Martínez, organized celebrations for May 25 throughout Spain. One of the biggest celebrations of that year took place in Madrid. Among other things, the event included a live action game of Pac-Man, performed by people dressed as characters from the game.
Since then, Geek Pride Day or Geek Pride Day has become a global celebration of all geeks – which companies have also seen as a day of high profitability. In fact, beginning in 2010, the festivals spread to places as varied as Nova Scotia, New York, Budapest, Romania, Israel, and California. Today is a common celebration all over the planet.
In 2013, in Gothenburg , Sweden, they decided to take this celebration one step further when they held the first Geek Pride parade. Science Fiction Bokhandeln, announcing it as: “A geek parade in the city is on the table and all geeks and cosplayers are invited to follow our Sith, the shining armor stormtroopers and the filthy rebels! It will be a fun troop with lots of photo opportunities, lots of geeks, and hopefully lots of sunshine. “ The parade was such a success for the community that it has become an annual tradition for Gothenburg.
From the perspective of the fans of “Star Wars”, it is an appropriate day since episode IV was released on May 25, 1977. A very significant date for more reasons:
May 25 is also Towel Day, a day to pay tribute to “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” and its author Douglas Adams. The party was created in 2001 as a way to pay tribute to Adams, who passed away on May 11 of that year.
May 25 is also a day of celebration for fans of author Terry Pratchett and his fantasy book series, “Discworld.” The novels of this British writer who died in 2015 take place on the fictional Discworld, a flat disk balanced on the backs of four elephants that are in turn on the back of a giant tortoise, Great A’Tuin. The world has its own calendar. The year has 800 days, or the time it takes for the disk to spin once on the backs of elephants.
In his novels, May 25 is celebrated as El día de las lilas or El Glorious May 25, the day in which the author is honored by shouting “Freedom! Equality! Justice! Love at reasonable prices! And a hard-boiled egg! ”. It’s a Discworld Remembrance Day, commemorating the People’s Revolution, which ended Lord Winter’s reign. Survivors of the revolution use a lilac spring and gather in the cemetery to honor those who failed.
