Guatemala: Dozens of protesters set fire to Congress in a protest against the Government

Dozens of protesters have entered the headquarters of the Guatemalan Congress this Saturday and set fire to the historic building, during a protest called against the cut in education spending in the Budgets approved for next year. Groups of hooded youths have thrown artifacts Arsonists against the building, they have broken several windows and finally they have managed to break down the main door of the Congress, to gain access to its interior. After ten minutes of chaos, the Police have finally managed to evict the protesters and the firefighters have proceeded to extinguish the fire. The protest had been called by various groups against the new Budgets approved by the Government chaired by Alejandro Giammattei. While thousands of citizens were peacefully demonstrating in front of the National Palace of Culture, where the Government is based, a violent group has moved towards the headquarters of the Congress and has managed to set fire to it. In light of these events, President Alejandro Giammatei has published a message on social media in which he warns that “we cannot allow him to vandalize with public or private property. Whoever is proven his participation in these criminal acts will fall under the full weight of the Law. I reiterate that you have the right to demonstrate according to the law. But neither can we allow it to vandalize with public or private property. Whoever is proven his participation in these criminal acts will fall under the full weight of the law. – Alejandro Giammattei (@DrGiammattei) November 21, 2020
