Halle Berry: "Oscar didn't change my career"

In 2002, Halle Berry became the first black actress to win the Oscar for Best Actress. Now, 20 years later, she looks back on her career.

ROME – Some 20 years after winning an Oscar, American actress Halle Berry finds the award hasn’t changed her life much. “The Oscar was moving, but it didn’t change my career,” said the 55-year-old in an interview with the Italian newspaper “Corriere della Sera”.

In March 2002, she became the first black actress to receive the prestigious Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in the drama Monster’s Ball. Many would have said at the time that she was not the right person for the role, she continued.

She too has experienced racism

Berry thinks many women before her deserve an Oscar. You have also experienced racism. However, progress has been made in the past 20 years. The fact that she was able to direct the drama film “Bruised” (2020) would have been unimaginable at the time. “I’d love to continue directing,” Berry said.

She will next be seen in the sci-fi adventure Moonfall. In the disaster film by German director Roland Emmerich, Berry plays an astronaut. dpa
