Has Spotify finished with record collections?

The progressive digitization of our life is palpable in many fields. We have already forgotten to develop photos on paper, except for those that are still in analog or some professionals. The DVD format seems even old, when with any digital platform you have access to a good number of films and series. And music? Do you remember when you went with a discman and your headphones? Or if you are already an age, the Walkman seems from another era.

Until relatively recently, no more than 9 or 10 years , physical disc sales were at a good pace. For example, in 2011 of all the records that were sold in Spain, almost 90% were on physical media, and in 2017, that 90% corresponded to digital music. It is no longer about CDs, vinyl records or even cassettes, the purchase of digital music has made us forget our collections of physical discs. It must be recognized that it is very practical to download any application and have millions of songs at your disposal.

Our way of living demands immediacy, and we consume digital products at any time and occasion. It is enough to enter any public transport to see how much of the travelers are with their headphones listening to music or viewing any content. Moreover, those born in the second millennium could be said to only know this type of format, that of having to insert a disc or a cassette in a reproducing device and hit Play no longer suits them. Why have one piece of content when you can have more than you can hear in multiple lifetimes at a time? Only those who decide to sell their records will keep those that have a special meaning. For example, some rarity, the gift of a friend, relative or partner or that record that managed to buy with so much effort.

The records, what to do with them?

A walk through any platform for the sale of second-hand items is a tangible example of how the panorama is. Yes, we no longer want to have more junk at home and we are giving them an outlet. Except for true collectors, the average user has the opportunity to earn space and some money while never missing a chance to continue listening to those records they have already sold. Spotify or Apple Music will give it to you automatically.

Now, there are those who resist it. Either nostalgia may or he always finds a space in which to keep those records. The question is to ask if you keep listening to music that way or is it a process of no return. We can ask ourselves all these questions not only with musical products, but also with the video format. VHS tapes seem to have gone the same way cassette did, and DVD may go the same way. Will we see the sales platforms plagued with DVD movies or will they definitely stop interesting?

The digitization process is unstoppable, and it seems that there will be no return. The improvement in the prices of data rates and the arrival of high-speed networks is increasing it. After all, the digital format is also full of advantages , although in the case of discs it leaves us without those great covers and without the booklets with the lyrics of the songs and the credits. Things of progress, which allows us to carry 70 million songs in our pockets, but which deprives us of graphic art.
