Heat Wave: 10 Tips to Cope with High Temperatures

New heat wave that we are going to experience in Spain. After what we already suffered in mid-July , a new heat wave begins tomorrow in which thermometers are expected to reach 45 degrees from Thursday in some cities and will last until next week. Therefore, we must be very careful and take some measures to be able to deal with high temperatures as we tell you in these ten tips below.

Tips to deal with the new heat wave in Spain

Last June and when we were about to celebrate the summer equinox, the meteorological experts were already warning that this would be a very hot summer and although it seemed that in recent days the temperatures had stabilized, after a fairly suffocating, a new “general and progressive” heat wave with temperatures that can touch 45ºC , as advanced by the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) will assault us from tomorrow, Wednesday, becoming much more noticeable as of Thursday and during the weekend and continuing until the beginning of next week.

In this way and with temperatures for the entire Peninsula and the Balearic Islands that are going to be unbearable for more than five days, it is important to try to deal with the situation with advice and remedies that allow us to endure as it may without suffering consequences ( sunstroke , dehydration, heat stroke) that can become really serious.

Let’s now know the ten tips that will help us cope with the coming heat wave :

  1. Get out of the house in the coolest hours of the day . In fact, it is good to avoid the time slot from 11:00 to 18:00, preferably covering yourself with a nimble hat and sunglasses in case you have to go out.
  2. Wear appropriate and light clothing . Clothes specially recommended with natural fibers.
  3. Refreshes the home and work environment . But without exaggerating with the air conditioning since we must not only take into account the current price of electricity but it must be used in moderation and respect for the environment. Close the windows and access doors to the room where you are going to turn on the air so that it does not “escape” and once you have managed to cool the environment you can turn it off until you feel the heat again.
  4. Reduce body temperature . A damp cloth on the neck, in extreme heat, can be a valuable help.
  5. Reduce the level of physical activity . Whenever possible, it is preferable to avoid heavy work, for example on the terrace of the house or in the garden. It is best that you do it during the first hours of the morning.
  6. Drink regularly and eat properly. It is good to avoid excessive alcohol consumption, especially in the hottest hours. Also avoid foods with a lot of fat and very hot. Give preference to light and fresh foods, such as salads and above all, fruit.
  7. Take some precautions if you drive . Never leave children or animals in the closed car in the sun, to avoid the many and dramatic news that occur in the summer.
  8. Store medications properly. Avoid leaving your medications in the sun, but make sure they are in a cool and safe place (a drawer, an indoor bathroom, etc.). Store medications in the refrigerator for which a storage temperature not exceeding 25-30 ° C is required.
  9. Take special precautions if you are at risk. If you are following a specific therapy, never interrupt it “because it is hot.” Instead, let your doctor know if you feel unwell, no matter how mild.
  10. Monitor and care for people at risk . Be aware of those around you who are at risk of heat stroke, as well as the homeless who live nearby. Offering help with small daily tasks, such as carrying groceries in the absence of the elevator, can go a long way.
