Apart from blocked streets and flooded cellars, Germany is initially spared major storm damage. Thunderstorms and heavy rain are expected today.
Munich – Filled cellars, streets blocked by branches and streams that have burst their banks: the Bavarian fire brigades in particular had a lot to do on Saturday night. But the number of major accidents and injured people is fortunately limited, said a spokesman for the Bavaria situation center.
In Lower Bavaria, aquaplaning had occurred on individual federal roads, as the Passauer Neue Presse reported. However, no one was seriously injured in the accident. According to the police, there were also no major operations in Garmisch-Patenkirchen and the Allgäu, where the highest warning level was declared at level 4.
Heavy rain warnings again
The German Weather Service (DWD) warned on Friday of heavy rain and landslides, especially in southern Germany – up to 80 liters per square meter are possible within a few hours. Meteorologists expected continuous rain until Saturday morning, occasionally accompanied by stormy gusts of up to 70 kilometers per hour. In the course of Saturday, heavy rain and thunderstorms, sometimes with small hailstorms, can be expected in parts of Germany.
There were also severe storms in neighboring countries on Thursday and Friday – some with fatal consequences. Five people died in Austria as a result of fallen trees, and at least eleven others were injured. According to the authorities, six people died in the storm on the French island of Corsica and another 20 were injured, some seriously. dpa
