How to activate the dark mode of WhatsApp on Android and iOS

After being in development for more than a year, you no longer need “tricks” or tricks to have the dark mode in WhatsApp. From this week – specifically since March 3, 2020 – the most anticipated functionality of the popular instant messaging application is now available: dark mode. This functionality is available to its 2 billion users worldwide.

According to WhatsApp, the dark mode aims to reduce visual fatigue in low-light environments, since the combination of pure black and white creates a high contrast that can cause eye fatigue, hence the dark mode tries to alleviate this situation. When we apply this mode, the application appears with a dark gray background and a whitish color. WhatsApp claims that the new color scheme reduces glare and helps improve contrast and readability.

Legibility and hierarchy of information, banners of change

“When choosing colors, we wanted to minimize eye strain and use colors closer to the system defaults on iPhone and Android, respectively. We wanted to help users easily focus their attention on each screen. We did this by using colors and other design elements to make sure the most important information stands out, “the company explained.

WhatsApp’s ‘Dark Mode’ feature is available to all Android and iOS users . This includes iPhone users with iOS 13 and Android (Android 10, Android 9 and earlier).

I have tried dark mode these first few days and it is very true that it makes a big difference in the way the application is used. It’s more comfortable on the eyes, and if you have an Android 10 phone and set the system-wide dark mode, you’ll see better visual consistency.

How to enable dark mode on Android:

  • Open WhatsApp
  • Select the Menu and click Settings
  • Select Chats
  • Select Topics
  • In the Choose Theme dialog, you will see “Default System”, “Light” or “Dark”
  • Choose “Dark”

  • All ready!

The dark mode looks particularly good on WhatsApp due to the green touches that are present throughout the interface, and they bring a visual touch to the application. In this theme, the backgrounds are black or dark gray and the font is light. Once this option is selected , you will always have WhatsApp with the dark mode activated, that is, it will be activated directly and there is no need to select it again. In addition, this change will be present in all the menus and all the conversations of the app.

How to enable dark mode on iOS:
