How to block a website in Google Chrome

It is possible that we have given an Android mobile phone to our child, or that we all use the same desktop computer at home, including children and adults.

If both the mobile device and the computer have Internet access, they may have Google Chrome as a browser. Thus, while in the mobile phone with Android it is most likely that it is the default web browser, in the case of the desktop computer we may have installed it ourselves (since if we use Windows it is normal that it comes with Microsoft Edge, or with Safari if it is an iMac or Mac Mini).

In these cases, it is normal for us to consider the possibility of blocking some websites in Google Chrome . A useful way to prevent access to them, either because at some point or other they may have given us problems, or because we simply do not want the little ones to be able to access their content.

A good example is found in pages with adult content. Or when we even simply wish that the child does not have access to social networks, at which time it is useful to block websites such as Facebook or Instagram, to name just a few.

Blocking websites in Google Chrome (Desktop)

On this occasion, Google Chrome does not have a function that allows, from the application, to block websites, so we must use an extension that offers this possibility.

Block Site becomes a useful option, which is capable of blocking websites quickly . In fact, just install it and start using the simple options it offers when defining a list of blocked websites. It is even possible to configure a redirect, so that we are automatically directed to a certain website when we try to visit a blocked one.

Its characteristics do not end here. And, for example, it is also possible to enable a specific limited time to access the website, to be able to enter it during a certain range of hours.

To do this, we must look for the Block Site extension on the Google Chrome extensions page. To do this, we access the Chrome web store and enter ‘Block Site’ in the search engine. Click on Add to Chrome , and then click again on the Add extension button.

In this way, the browser will install the extension, and from then on we can start using it.

How to configure it? Very simple: first, we look for the extension icon in the upper right corner of the Chrome screen; specifically, we must find an orange shield with a circle and a diagonal line in the middle.

When we want to block a certain website, we simply have to visit the page in question and click on the icon, so that a submenu appears with the Block this site button. We simply click on it, and from then on it will not be possible to access it.

Of course, if at any time you want to unblock any of the blocked websites, we must click on Edit your list in the upper right, which will open a configuration window where the blocked websites will be displayed. Each of the blocked websites will have a minus icon on the right; and if we click on it, the site will be unlocked.

How to block websites on Chrome Android (mobile phone)

On the mobile phone, the steps to follow are quite similar, mainly due to the fact that we must access this function through the Block Site application. Therefore, we must access the Play Store and look for the ‘blocksite’ app.

Click on the Install button, and once installed we must click on Go to configuration when we open the application for the first time. This time we must enable the application to take control of the browser, thereby blocking the websites that we want to block.

Finally, to block a website we just have to click on the green “+” icon located in the lower right corner of the screen, which will open a new advantage where you can block the website. It is even possible to block a certain mobile application.

To finish, we just have to add the full URL of the website we want to block, and we will see a green check mark right in the upper right corner of the screen. Just by touching it, access to that particular website will have been blocked.
