As with previous versions of its operating system, Microsoft tends to periodically update Windows 10, adding security patches (especially), and new and interesting functions . For this reason, choosing to enable the option of periodic updates can be very helpful when it comes to keeping our computer in optimal condition.
For example, almost every month Microsoft releases a series of security updates. Whereas, every six months, it makes the calls as updates of “functions”, where the manufacturer integrates and adds new functions, more or less important.
As many specialists say, enabling automatic updates can become a useful option when it comes to keeping the computer as secure as possible , while enjoying the new functions as soon as they are ready for our PC.
Not in vain, we could include in this section some of the advantages that not only updating Windows provides, but also enabling the automatic updates function, which includes increasing the security of our operating system against the presence of new malware and viruses, or include important updates related to driver software for many of the devices we use in conjunction with the PC.
However, we must not forget that, recently, Windows 10 updates were accused of generating a number of errors, and also other added problems. To which is added, incidentally, that certain users prefer to have control of what is installed in the system (that is, the type of update, its purpose and what it includes and / or implies).
Therefore, when the time comes, we may be interested in discovering how to disable automatic updates in Windows 10 . Obviously, this does not mean that we do not worry about updating the operating system of our computer properly, but that we will control the process, choosing only those updates that, for example, may interest us the most.
Disabling automatic updates through Settings (temporarily)
Generally, it is not entirely necessary to permanently disable Windows Update settings (which is what the Windows update service developed by Microsoft is called).
For example, in case we want to skip a certain update, we can pause the updates until the day we want to install them. Thus, with the option offered by Configuration it is perfectly possible to stop system updates for a period of 35 days.
If we want to disable temporary updates temporarily, we must open Settings , click on Update and Security , click on Windows Update and then on Advanced options .
We will find a section called Pause updates . We must use the drop-down menu to select how long we want to disable automatic updates.
Disabling automatic updates with the help of the Registry
In case you are using Windows 10 Pro, it is possible to disable automatic updates through the System Registry . Of course, before making any changes, we highly recommend making a complete backup of your computer.
To permanently disable Windows 10 updates, click on the Start icon and type regedit to start the Registry Editor. Now we must navigate to the following route:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Policies Microsoft Windows
We right-click on the Windows folder, select the New submenu and choose the Key or Key option. Once this is done, we name the new key WindowsUpdate and press Enter .
Now click with the right button on the key that we have created, select New and choose the Key or Key option. We name the new key AU and press Enter .
Again, we hover over AU with the right button, select the New submenu and choose the DWORD (32-bit) Value option. Now we name the new key NoAutoUpdate and press Enter. We simply double click on the newly created key, and modify the value from 0 to 1 . To finish, click on OK or Accept and restart the computer.
Although the automatic updates will be disabled, it is perfectly possible to proceed to download and install the updates that we want, as necessary, through the Check for updates function within Windows Update.
