In most cases, when we use a modem for the first time, it is most likely that it will be the technician of the broadband operating company who installs and configures it, since this service is usually included in the contract, and is also free usually.
However, when instead of carrying out a new installation, we proceed to acquire a new modem with the intention of improving the characteristics and technical performance of the original, then it is necessary to have some basic knowledge to help us know how to proceed to install it.
Although it is true that the steps to follow could be slightly different depending on the manufacturer, in many cases, we can follow a series of basic steps so that, as a guide, it can be useful in this regard.
Some steps before starting
Before starting, it is essential to make sure that our modem is compatible with the connection provided by the broadband operator that we have contracted. In this case it is essential to verify the possibility, especially before buying the new modem.
Then, it is convenient to make sure that you have all the necessary cables , as well as decide the most suitable place where to put it. Remember that if, for example, you plan to connect the modem to a router, it is essential to use an Ethernet cable.
It is also useful to read the specific instructions of the modem , since each version is unique, so it may require some type of additional configuration to the steps that we will indicate in the next section.
Installing our new modem
First, we must connect one end of the coaxial cable to the cable outlet (this type of cable has a connection similar to a needle, which you will find located at each end). Make sure to screw it tightly onto the cable outlet, this will ensure that the connection is solid.
Once this is done, we must connect the other end of the cable to the input of the modem , also making sure to tighten depending on what is necessary. Now plug the modem’s power cord into a power outlet . Remember that, as with routers, it is essential to use the one provided by the manufacturer. Once this is done, connect the free end of the modem power cable to the device (it is not recommended to do this before).
In case we are going to use a router (for example, a Wi-Fi router), we must connect the end of the Ethernet cable to the modem, and the other end to the router or router. Finally, the modem will most likely get the automatic configuration provided by the operator, so we would not have to do anything else.
