If you use a laptop or an all-in-one computer (which includes a monitor), it is most likely that they have speakers built into the system, so that it is not necessary to use any type of external speaker .
However, if we are using a desktop computer or even want to improve the sound quality, then a basic recommendation is to get some good external speakers , especially if we want to enjoy better quality.
Of course, when connecting them to our computer, the steps will be slightly different depending on whether we are using a desktop computer or a laptop, or if it is even a speaker with Bluetooth connectivity (as, for example, many of smart speakers that we find in stores today).
For example, high-end audio systems have a type of S / PDIF connection that requires the use of special optimal cables and equipment with separate S / PDIF connections (one for S / PDIF in) and one for output ( S / PDIF out).
While in many cases it is enough to connect the speakers to the rear speaker socket that we will find located at the back of the computer (specifically in the audio output sockets on the I / O panel), either on the front or side in case it is a laptop. In the latter cases, in fact, the most common is to connect them to the headphone jack. But let’s go in parts.
Installing our external speakers to the computer
Before starting the process, we must make sure that the computer is turned off . On the other hand, we strongly recommend avoiding speakers that can work with batteries, since they are characterized by not having much power.
We connect the speakers to the power outlet, and place them in the place that we like the most. In this case, the ideal is to place them next to the laptop, placing the left speaker on the left side, and the right on the right.
Now we find the 3.5 mm connector that we will find connected to the cable on the back of the speakers, since it is the one that we will use to connect them to the computer.
At the back of the tower of our computer, specifically where the sound card is installed, we will find several small, round and color-coded ports. In most cases, the port for the connection of the speakers is usually green , labeled as ‘Audio out’ or have the symbol of a headphones as a drawing.
We simply connect and firmly push the speaker connector into this socket , which will help us get a good connection. Of course, without pressing too much if we encounter any resistance.
In some configurations the speakers could also come with an additional ‘subwoofer’ in order to provide bass sounds. If so, before connecting it, we must find out if our sound card supports multiple speakers, and if so, follow the color code while connecting the sockets.
Finally, we turn on the computer and the speakers, and adjust the volume control as necessary. Depending on the type of speaker we have bought, it is possible that the volume control can be configured directly from the speaker. Even some speakers, such as those developed by the Creative brand, can even come with an external treble and bass regulator, to fully customize the sound.
