A file with the .vob extension consists of a DVD video file, which in most cases tends to contain video and audio data , in addition to any other content related to movies, such as menus. and subtitles .
They can be encrypted, and the most common is to find them stored in the root of a DVD disc, commonly inside a folder labeled with the name of VIDEO_TS .
But a DVD disc is not the only one where we could find VOB files. For example, a well-known and popular car racing video game such as “Live for Speed” uses files with this extension in order to texture and model cars in 3D.
Although the VOB file will open and play automatically when we insert the DVD disc into a compatible player.
How to open a VOB file in Windows
A file with this extension can be easily opened on a computer when played with most media players. This is the case of Windows Media Player 12 (or higher) or VLC Media Player , which are capable of playing them, although sometimes, for example, the Windows media player may indicate that the file is not compatible.
In the event that this occurs, it will be necessary to install a specific VOB file player on our computer , which is obviously compatible with our operating system.
This is the case of Media Player Classic, PotPlayer or GOM Player, although there are also non-free players such as PowerDVD, PowerDirector or PowerProducer, developed by CyberLink.
At the time of opening it, it is only necessary to insert the DVD disc in the disc reader of the computer , or to find the root folder from the multimedia player, to proceed with its automatic reproduction.
How to open a VOB file on Mac
If you use macOS , it is also perfectly possible to play and open a VOB file on Mac. Although Quicktime does not support VOB files , it is possible to install a compatible player on this operating system.
For example, we can use Roxio Toast, VLC, MPlayerX or Elmedia Player.
However, we could also choose to convert VOB files simply and for free in order to be able to save them in a more compatible format, such as MOV, AVI, MKV or MP4, which can be played more easily and quickly.
