Although nowadays the reproduction of digital movies, through streaming platforms, has become one of the best known and most popular ways, there are still users who enjoy buying their favorite movies in stores and shopping centers, in DVD and Blu format. -Ray .
This is mainly due to the fact that the catalog of many of these platforms is not as complete as we sometimes would like, in such a way that in many moments it is most likely that we will not find that movie that we would like to see so much in those moments. Therefore, the only thing we have left is to go to a nearby store, cross our fingers that they have it, and buy it.
However, if a friend has just lent it to you, and you like it so much that you want to have it with you forever (so that, for example, you can see it from time to time without having to ask for it again on different occasions), a possible solution is to extract the data from that DVD and copy it , a suitable option if, of course, you have a computer with a DVD burner, and obviously you also have a blank (empty) DVD.
Of course, remember that this process is only valid when the film in question is not subject to copyright, and, above all, when after copying it it is not distributed or put on sale.
Extracting (ripping) the film
First of all, as we have briefly mentioned in the previous lines, it is essential to make sure that we have all the essential equipment. This means having a Windows or Mac computer, a DVD reader-writer, and a blank DVD + R or DVD-R disc.
Once we have everything, we need an application that extracts the content of the original DVD. An interesting option is the MakeMKV program. After completing the installation process, you need to open the program. We introduce the original DVD in the disk drive, and immediately the program will recognize it.
Now we must click on the icon where a large disk drive is shown. Once the disc is selected, the program indicates a list of chapters and segments that can be extracted and copied. If you want to copy only the movie itself, we just have to select the longest title (or the largest file), and deactivate the rest of the boxes.
Finally, when we have selected only the parts that interest us, we must click on the Make MKV button. The program will begin to extract the content of the DVD, which will take more or less depending on the size of the file and the technical specifications of our computer.
Transcoding the file
Once the file has been extracted, it is likely that we have a fairly large file, which must be transcoded in order to be used on different devices. A useful option is found in HandBrake , an equally free application that will help us a lot in the process.
We must click on Source , and select the file that the previous program has finished copying. Now we simply have to choose where we want to see the video, thanks to the fact that the program’s developers have created a series of presets for a wide variety of devices. Thus, once one of the available options has been selected, the program will automatically adjust all the settings.
We choose a place to store the transcoded file, and click on Start . Once the process is completed, you will have a new file, perfectly configured to be able to be played on the device you have chosen.
