If you have just bought an iPhone 12 (congratulations on the purchase!), And you already had an old iPhone before, it is normal that you wonder how it is possible to transfer all the necessary data from the old device to the new one.
This is something quite common, since, in most cases, it is common to want to have the same data and files that we already had on the new mobile phone, including photos and videos. Even if we want to transfer them from an Android to our new iPhone.
Fortunately, there are different ways to achieve this, either using a cable through your computer or Mac, or directly from iCloud.
Using the automatic configuration of our iPhone
To simplify this process to the maximum, Apple designed a tremendously useful functionality some time ago that, precisely, helps us to restore our new device from a previous compatible backup, which greatly facilitates the process.
This functionality appears during the automatic configuration process of our new iPhone, so that, first of all, we must turn on the new device , select the language and keep the old iPhone close to the new one.
Click Continue in the pop-up window that will appear on the previous device asking us to configure our new iPhone with the Apple ID. Now we have to scan the image that will appear in the new iPhone with the old device and enter the access code of the same in the new iPhone.
At this time we must proceed to configure Face ID or Touch ID in the new terminal, and choose if we want to restore the new device from a more recent compatible backup, if this option appears.
Now we choose to restore the phone from an iCloud or iTunes backup, transfer data from an Android phone, or basically set it up as a new iPhone. We accept the terms and conditions, click Continue, and finally complete the setup process as we normally would.
How to use backups (and iCloud restore itself)
First, we must open Settings on the old iPhone, an application that we will find on its home screen. Then, click on the banner with our Apple ID, and then on iCloud .
Now click on iCloud Backup , and then on Make backup now . Once the backup has finished, we proceed to turn off our old iPhone.
Then we turn on the new iPhone. We follow the configuration instructions, and when the button appears, we tap on Restore from iCloud backup . Now we must log in to our iCloud account (through Apple ID), and we continue with the process. Finally, when the time comes, we must choose the backup that we just carried out .
Transferring the data in macOS Catalina (or later versions)
In case you prefer to transfer the data through Mac, you should know that it is also perfectly possible to do so. To do this, we start by connecting our old iPhone to the Mac . Click on the Finder icon, which we will find located in the Dock, and select the iPhone in the Locations section.
In case it is the first time that we connect it, it will be necessary to click on the Trust button. Then, we click on the checkbox next to Encrypt local backup , create a password if necessary, and click on Back up now .
When the process is finished, we disconnect the old iPhone, turn it off and turn on the new iPhone. Then, we connect it to the Mac, follow the instructions to choose the language and configure the WiFi connectivity, and click on the Restore button from Mac or PC .
Now we click on our new iPhone in the Locations section (within the Finder window), and then click on Restore from this backup . Now, we simply choose the most recent backup, click on Continue and let the process complete.
