This galaxy located in the constellation Virgo, also known as LEDA 43690 and IRAS 12499-0930, belongs to a small group of spiral galaxies.
Now, thanks to the NASA / ESA Hubble Space Telescope, we can contemplate this composition of separate exposures acquired by the Hubble Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) instrument, to discover it in all its splendor thanks to the four filters used, each one of them designating different wavelengths.
"Hubble's WFC3 captured Mrk 1337 in a wide range of ultraviolet, visible and infrared wavelengths, producing this image rich in detail," the astronomers explain. "These observations are part of a campaign to improve our understanding of the expansion rate of the Universe."
"They were proposed by Adam Riess, who was awarded the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics for his contributions to the discovery of the accelerating expansion of the Universe , together with Saul Perlmutter and Brian Schmidt," the experts conclude.
