Initiative launched to train girls and young people in science, technology and mathematics

The program of the MinTIC is called Girls STEAM and seeks that 5,000 participants train for free in these and other areas of knowledge.

This Monday, May 31, the Ministry of ICT and the Maloka Interactive Museum launched the national call for the Girls STEAM program, an initiative that seeks to strengthen the talents and vocations of girls and adolescents in the areas of science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM).

The program is aimed at 5,000 young people between the ages of 12 and 15 , who will have access to virtual workshops and laboratories, personalized mentoring and materials. This is expected to awaken your interest in professional careers related to the world of technology and communications.

According to the MinTIC, the Girls STEAM pilot project was born in 2020 and benefited 360 girls and adolescents in Bogotá through 16 virtual work sessions.

By 2021, it was established that 70% of the beneficiaries are from public educational institutions. The remaining percentage must correspond to girls from strata 1, 2 and 3 who are part of private educational institutions that benefit populations in a state of vulnerability.

Participants from all over the country will receive a kit consisting of a tablet and a toolbox , which includes materials and supplies. According to the portfolio, the activities will be developed through 12 offline autonomous work sessions and three virtual sessions with the accompaniment of mediators.

In addition, they will have recognized mentors in the STEAM fields, particularly in topics associated with ICT, “with the purpose that they share their life experiences in a virtual meeting and accompany them to create their proposals,” said the Ministry.

How to sign up?

Girls and adolescents who wish to participate must meet the following requirements and apply before June 30 :

  1. Be between 12 and 15 years old and be enrolled in public and private educational institutions in the country.
  2. Belong to strata 1, 2 or 3.
  3. Form a group of at least 25 girls and a maximum of 50 who are in the same age range.
  4. Ask the rector of the institution to send a letter of intent to the email [email protected] in which he presents the institution, the number of interested students and the contact information.

If the institution meets the conditions for participation, it will be contacted and invited to a socialization session.

Subsequently, the young women must fill out the application form. To do this, they must have an identity document that allows verifying their age (between 12 and 15 years old at the time of application). This must be submitted using an online application form.

Private institutions will have an additional verification to confirm that the girls and their families belong to strata 1, 2 or 3 by validating public service receipts .

Participants will be admitted in order of arrival until the 5,000 are completed. The results will be socialized by the MinTIC.

The portfolio added that if the selected educational institution is not located in the capital of the department, it must be responsible for the logistics that allow the reception and transfer of the material , as well as the delivery to each of the participating girls.

Institutions will be contacted in order of arrival. They must sign and send via email a letter of commitment to promote and support the participation and permanence of the girls in the program.

“Each department of the country may have the participation of at least one and a maximum of 10 institutions. If the number of interested parties is exceeded, priority will be given to those who belong to networks linked to a higher education institution, ”said the Ministry.
