Mintic explains what happened to connectivity in Colombia this week

The ICT portfolio referred to the failures in cities such as Cali and Bogotá in the framework of the national strike. He added that “the content of the social networks or the media does not intervene.”

After a week in which intermittent telephone and internet services were reported in some cities of the country, the ICT Ministry published information on the panorama of the country’s connectivity as of Friday, May 7 .

According to the ministry, on Thursday the 6th the internet and telephony services of an operator in Cali were interrupted due to a vandalism action. Although he does not specify which company it is, he stressed that numerous accesses and fixed lines have been recovered since then.

“With a cut-off to Friday 7, there were damages in 3,844 accesses and 4,142 fixed lines. After migration and recovery work, a significant number of fixed line and xDSL services were recovered. On Friday night, there were 4,822 accesses to recover ”, stated the Mintic.

The Government also pointed out that access difficulties have complicated the task of solving the faults detected in some areas of Cauca and Valle del Cauca. Cali has been the epicenter of strong tensions and the escalation of violence during the national strike marches. There have been murders of protesters and problems of shortages that forced the creation of humanitarian corridors.

This week, the Mintic had already reported that in the capital of the Valley there were failures in one of the nodes of the Cable & Wireless company that provides the transport network service. “The failure, reported since 8 pm on Wednesday, May 5, affected the voice service in communes 10, 11, 12, 15, 19 and 20,” he said.

That time, the ministry assured that the incident occurred “due to the lack of electricity” at this transmission node, as it is located near a gasoline pump that “was the object of vandalism and the electricity company disconnected the supply for security reasons.”

The ministry reported that the failures in the optical fiber that had without service to some homes in the municipalities of Florida, Puerto Tejada, Santander de Quilichao and Piendamó were resolved by the operator.

As for Bogotá, the Mintic assured that the failures in the broadband internet service are due to technical problems that are in the process of being solved. “In specific cases, vandalism or problems in the electricity supply caused alterations in the service.”

He also reported that seven municipalities and non-municipalized areas of the department of Amazonas already have the institutional offer of the National High Speed Connectivity Project. He added that although some failures in radio bases and interconnection points have slightly altered the service, there are no effects on the transport network.

About social networks

On Thursday 13 there were complaints from users of the social network Instagram in Colombia who claimed that some publications they made within the platform’s stories module began to disappear. Precisely within the framework of the social outbreak that the country has been experiencing since last week.

Adam Mosseri, director of Instagram, said Thursday that the platform experienced a technical error that affected the stories, highlights and archives of millions of people around the world. He also clarified that the error was not related to the content or hashtag but to a widespread problem.

“People from all over the world, from Colombia to East Jerusalem, use our platform to share what is happening. We know it was a really bad experience. Ultimately, I am responsible for the stability of Instagram. So sorry”

The Mintic highlighted this response in its report, as did the publication of Doug Madory, director of Internet Analysis, who explained that the interruption in Cali on May 4 was due to a fiber cut that affected some 7,000 Movistar users .

“There is no evidence of a government-led internet shutdown, as has been reported elsewhere. We saw a very slight decrease in traffic volume to AS3816 in Cali, but overall it seems normal, ”says Madory.

Along these lines, the ministry stressed that it does not have any interference in the policies and rules of use of social networks.

“This portfolio does not intervene in the contents of the social networks, nor of the public and private media that operate in the country. On the contrary, it is committed to guaranteeing connectivity and access to telecommunications for all Colombians ”, he concluded.
