With the premiere of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” just around the corner, it’s no wonder that Inmoov, a robot with more than obvious similarities to the mythical C-3PO from the epic space opera film franchise, has reappeared on the scene. In addition, its creator, the Frenchman Gael Langevin, has also presented his particular robot at the Maker Faire Bilbao creative technologies festival, a fair to exhibit projects linked to “do it yourself” and open or free knowledge.
InMoov (who was born in 2012) has the peculiarity of being 1.80 centimeters tall and being very skilled : he can hug you, hold children in his arms and rock them or serve us drinks with his own hands. The only thing is that it is not gold (it is white), nor does it speak six million languages like the robot from Star Wars – and it has no legs – but you can build it yourself at home with the only requirement of patience and a small 3D printer (12x12x12 ).
This is because the robot has been developed with open source or open source software , so it is available to anyone who wants to use or even improve it. The hardware is based on Arduino technology, also open source . Each person is free to download the plans from the network and follow the assembly guides through step-by-step videos. The cost of printing and building InMoov is around 800 euros.
