In the mid-19th century, Europeans drove the African elephant to near extinction because of the ivory market. In 1869, the manufacturers Phelan and Collander offered $ 10,000 to anyone who could find a replacement. Brothers John and Isaiah Hyatt discovered it: celluloid. Alfred Nobel mixed the cotton powder with ether and alcohol and created nitrocellulose . Then he added nitroglycerin and sawdust . In 1868 he baptized the mixture with the name of dynamite.
