Latest climate report says we broke a 125,000-year-old record

It is clear that with climate change our planet does not stop undergoing important changes that are also mostly serious or keep on alert not only environmentalists but also experts and governments. One of these changes is global temperature and as it continues to increase, something that has been confirmed in the last climate report in which it is also reported that we have exceeded a record of 125,000 years ago.

Latest climate report says we broke a 125,000-year-old record

It was the last report presented by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in which it is explained how the average global temperature of the planet in the decade 2011-2020 was 1.09 ° C higher than that of the period 1850-1900, constituting a “thermal” record that had not occurred since the last ice age, which occurred about 125,000 years ago.

Analysis of these data brings us dangerously close to the internationally agreed threshold of global warming at 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial temperature. A value that, according to Maisa Rojas, lead author and coordinator of the recent IPCC report, is likely to be achieved, if there are not immediate and large-scale reductions of all industrially produced greenhouse gases.

In detail, the IPCC report , based on the latest tools for studying the climate system, estimates that global temperature should reach and probably exceed the 1.5 ° C warming “bet” in the next 20 years. This event, if not mitigated and controlled, could lead in the long term to incalculable damage to our civilization, for example it would contribute to more frequent and severe coastal flooding , increasing the frequency of catastrophic marine events going from an average of one every hundred years, to one per year at the end of this century.

On this report, the French climatologist Valérie Masson-Delmotte , director of the Commission for Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy of France and co-chair of the IPCC Working Group, said: «This report is an objective confirmation, which allows to have a much more image clear of past, present and future climate, which is essential to understand where we are going, what can be done and how we can prepare … Human activities still have the potential to determine the course of future climate. The scientific evidence is clear that shows that carbon dioxide (CO2) is the main driver of climate change, even if other greenhouse gases and air pollutants contribute to influence the climate.

Scientists identify the exact number of hamburgers you can eat without destroying the Earth

A new report highlights how much we should reduce our meat consumption per week to prevent the climate crisis from worsening.

Earth has reached 'Code Red' in pollution

A new report warns that humanity is 'unequivocally facing a climate emergency'.

Just two hamburgers a week? Study says that will save the world

Mexico contributes only 1.4% of greenhouse gas emissions, and yet could experience more natural disasters in the southeast. Reducing meat consumption could prevent it.

How can we observe climate change?

Climate change happens over relatively long periods of time, we need records of what the climate was like in the past to observe this change.
