With all the new challenges, the corona virus was somewhat forgotten. Karl Lauterbach and Robert Wieler want to counteract this. They provide information about the current situation around Covid-19.
- Wieler and Lauterbach are optimistic about the pandemic winter: Germany is well prepared – but four-digit infection numbers are expected
- Lauterbach announces new measures : combating the pandemic in winter and autumn
- Federal press conference on the Corona situation : Lauterbach and Wieler provide information on the current situation
Update from September 30, 11:13 a.m .: The press conference to assess the corona situation by Health Minister Lauterbach and RKI President Wieler has ended. Both explained that Germany is well prepared for a Corona autumn and winter. They presented new and further measures to combat the pandemic. The fourth vaccination, which protects against severe courses, makes up a large part of this. The minister and RKI President are nevertheless assuming high and four-digit numbers of infections in autumn and winter.
Update from September 30, 11:11 a.m .: The current crises do not have a major impact on the pandemic. “We have to prevent the population from being overwhelmed with crises,” says Lauterbach. The energy crisis and inflation crisis are well under control. Wieler adds that you can go into the new wave “relaxed”. “It won’t be an easy winter,” said the RKI President. Despite the many crises, Lauterbach and Wieler assume that the population will get through the Corona winter well.
Update from September 30, 10:58 a.m.: Lauterbach explains that the adapted vaccines to BA 5 form five times more antibodies than conventional vaccines. They therefore protect better. “We are well prepared,” says Lauterbach. The virus will not come to the fore. Nevertheless, four-digit infection numbers are expected. “We are better prepared than last autumn,” said the minister.
Corona press conference: Lauterbach and Wieler promote vaccination
Update from September 30, 10:47 a.m .: According to Lauterbach, the fourth vaccination, which was adapted to the new Covid variants, can also protect against infection for a short time. Wieler adds that the aim of vaccination is to protect against a severe course. The RKI President classifies the current corona situation as “stable”.
Update from September 30, 10:39 a.m .: The Minister of Health rates Germany as “more cautious” compared to the measures taken by other countries. Lauterbach assumes a recession, which can also be promoted by the fact that more people are suffering from the corona virus and are therefore unable to do their jobs.
Update from September 30th, 10.30 a.m .: Lauterbach estimates the dark number of corona infections to be about three times as high. Wieler also estimates the number of unreported cases to be two to three times higher. This is also because fewer and fewer people are taking a PCR test. However, the number of unreported cases can also decrease again, according to the minister.
Corona virus in autumn – RKI explains protective measures
Update from September 30, 10:20 a.m .: Wieler explains five measures on how to protect yourself from infection. Despite the energy crisis, ventilation should continue to be regular. If you have symptoms of illness, you should stay at home and avoid contact with other people. If the corona symptoms worsen, you can resort to medication such as Paxlovid. The RKI still recommends wearing the mask indoors. As a fifth measure, Wieler mentioned vaccination. People should also get vaccinated against the flu.
Update from September 30, 10:17 a.m .: The corona virus is only the second most common respiratory disease, as Wieler explains. The incidences have risen again. The middle age groups are currently particularly affected by Covid-19. “We must continue to take the virus seriously,” says the RKI President. Although most infections are mild, they could still lead to deaths in risk groups. A “mild course” just means that you don’t have to go to the hospital, as Wieler explains.
Corona wave in autumn – Lauterbach announces measures to combat it
Update from September 30, 10:12 a.m .: Lauterbach appeals to the federal states to implement measures quickly. A pandemic radar helps assess the spread of the virus. This radar can be accessed on the RKI website. The fourth vaccination reduces the risk of a severe course by 90 percent in a person who has already been vaccinated three times, as the Minister of Health explains. Lauterbach warns that we are facing a new wave.
Update from September 30, 10:07 a.m .: Lauterbach announced four measures to combat the virus. A new vaccination campaign is intended to help combat the corona virus. The drug Paxlovid is also important in the fight against it. The drug treatment of a corona infection is “significantly” better. The Infection Protection Act is also one of the measures.
Update from September 30, 10:03 a.m .: Lauterbach and Wieler are now providing information about the current corona situation. The Health Minister emphasizes that Corona is currently not the focus of the news. Nevertheless, Germany is at the beginning of an autumn and winter wave. Other states are also registering higher numbers of infections. The R value is currently 1.4.
Update from September 30, 9:50 a.m.: The federal press conference by Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) and Lothar Wieler, President of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), on the current corona situation will take place at 10 a.m. in Berlin. We will inform you live about the results of the press conference.
Corona risk banned? Lauterbach and Wieler provide information – new positive information on vaccination effectiveness
Munich – Autumn really didn’t waste any time this year to spread in Germany. Sometimes there is even a hint of winter blowing through the country. And as is well known, this will bring with it a combination of unprecedented challenges. Above all, the energy crisis, and with it inflation. On top of that, there is the question of how the Ukraine war will develop and what consequences, perhaps not yet foreseeable, will come to Europe as a result.
With all these topics, it is almost forgotten that the third Corona winter is approaching. Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) and Lothar Wieler, President of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), have set themselves the task of sharpening the senses of the danger posed by the virus, which has not yet been completely overcome. The two health experts will explain the current situation regarding Corona in a press conference this Friday from 10 a.m. Will they then also raise their index finger in warning with a view to the skyrocketing incidence in Munich during the Wiesn?

Corona in Germany: According to the RKI, the vaccination rate is largely stagnant – only one exception
New warnings against carelessness when dealing with infections can certainly be expected, as well as references to various studies related to the pandemic. The current RKI monthly report on Covid-19 published on Thursday states, among other things, that the vaccination rate has largely stagnated for weeks. By Sunday, September 25th, almost 185.4 million vaccinations against the virus were officially administered in Germany. Currently, “a relevant increase can only be observed for the 2nd booster vaccination in the population aged 60 and over”.
With regard to residents and guests of long-term care facilities, there is only a slow increase here. The RKI recommends immunizing these vulnerable groups of people against Covid-19 with a prick as part of the seasonal influenza vaccination. The “incidence of hospitalizations caused by Covid-19” shows that such a booster vaccination would “significantly reduce the risk of hospitalization” even in the current omicron wave.
A “special evaluation of the effectiveness of the vaccination depending on the distance to the last vaccination” is interesting. Accordingly, the booster vaccination protects “with high effectiveness against severe Covid 19 courses” even after more than six months. (mg/vk)
