Levi's® 501®: a fashion icon now designed for circularity

Sustainability is one of the most important pillars for Levi’s®, a brand that has always been in constant evolution and that, thanks to this, is a symbol of innovation. This 2022 came a moment worth recognizing, since in their search for more circular practices, they launched the most sustainable version of their iconic 501® jeans.

The are the jeans you know and probably have worn, but this new circular version is made with recycled and renewable raw materials, and that does not leave out the characteristics of durability, quality and texture (they feel like regular denim).

The great strategic ally to travel this path towards circularity is the same one that since 2012 has worked to recycle textile waste.

How are Levi’s® 501® Designed for Circularity made?

Renewcell plays an important role in the manufacturing process of these jeans, since the sustainably sourced fiber they produce, with part of textile waste and post-consumer denim, called Circulose®, constitutes each piece of these new pants.

Levi’s® and Renewcell have worked hand-in-hand for several years to create garments that reduce environmental impact without sacrificing quality or durability, and the 501® Designed for Circularity is no exception.

“We are in continuous research and development and strive to improve our design practices to conserve natural resources in every way possible,” said Una Murphy, director of Innovation and Design at Levi’s®.

A clear objective: reduce the environmental impact

The official launch in Mexico of these new Levi’s® icons was on February 1st, and builds a special path towards the celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the Blue Jean that will be in May of the following year.

In order to reduce the pollution that the process emits, the metal trims of the jeans are not galvanized and the details of the pockets, the labels and the threads are made of 100% cotton, which allows for easier recycling at the end of the its useful life.

For Levi’s®, responsible consumption has been and will always be the most important thing when designing new garments and collections. If you want to be part of the change and you want 501® jeans to be part of your wardrobe, you can get them in and from selected physical stores (Mexico City: Madero, Antara and Satélite; Guadalajara: Andares and in Puebla).
