Mallorca vacation despite Corona: entry, incidence, rules – what travelers need to know

Mallorca- Take a break from Corona in the summer and have a good time on vacation in Mallorca and the Balearic Islands – is that possible in the current situation? In 2019 around 5.3 million Germans vacationed in the Balearic Islands, most of them on the island of Mallorca. But in view of the corona pandemic and the appearance of the delta variant, the question is how the situation in Mallorca and the Balearic Islands currently looks. All of Spain was hit hard by the corona virus, especially in autumn 2020, no European metropolis had higher numbers of infections than Madrid at the time. In the meantime, large parts of Spain are no longer considered risk areas, Mallorca and the Balearic Islands are no longer classified as risk areas by Germany, the Federal Foreign Office has lifted travel warnings. But Spain is still not doing as well as Italy, for example, where the Corona situation is currently good.

The national health emergency has been lifted throughout Spain, which means that there are no longer any uniform and nationwide Corona rules. More than half of the Spanish population is against Corona at least once, in the Balearic Islands about a third of the residents are fully vaccinated. Nevertheless, the number of infections in the country and on the Balearic Islands is increasing again.

The 7-day incidence in Spain has been below 100 since the beginning of May, but the number has been rising again since around mid-June. The 7-day incidence of the Balearic Islands (Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera) is currently 74, well above the critical value of 50 infections per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days.

The Federal Foreign Office provides current information about Corona in Spain and the Balearic Islands.

The delta variant of the corona virus has also already been detected in Spain. The latest report on virus variants by the government gives the value for the whole of Spain at 2.7 percent, there are no values for individual regions such as the island of Mallorca or the Balearic Islands. And the numbers shouldn’t be too meaningful either: They refer to the week from May 31st to June 6th.

Mallorca vacation: entry by plane: which corona rules apply in the Balearic Islands?

If you travel by air from Germany to Mallorca or the other Balearic Islands, you do not need a negative corona test or proof of vaccination when entering the country, because Germany is no longer classified as a risk area by Spain. For the Balearic Islands – in contrast to mainland Spain – the following rule applies: Participants: Group trips organized inside of more than 20 people must present proof of vaccination or a negative PCR test when checking in at the accommodation. The background is numerous cases of corona infections during school trips on Mallorca.

Vacation despite Corona on Mallorca: Digital form for entry by air

Anyone traveling to Mallorca or the other islands of the Balearic Islands by plane or ship must fill out a digital form. The QR code that is generated must be presented upon entry, tour operators and airlines must point out this form.

Holidays in Mallorca: which corona rules apply in the Balearic Islands?

In Mallorca and the Balearic Islands, the corona restrictions have been gradually relaxed. The following currently applies:

  • Private meetings: there are no more restrictions, the regional government of the Balearic Islands recommends that no more than 15 people should meet in public and no more than 10 people should meet indoors.
  • Night curfew: Abolished after a court ruling.
  • Mask requirement: In the open air there is no longer a general mask requirement. A mask must be worn if the distance of at least 1.5 meters to people from other households cannot be maintained.
  • Restaurants: Inside restaurants and cafés, a maximum of six people can sit at one table, outside up to 12 people.
  • Beach: There must be a distance of two meters between loungers, parasols and other pieces of furniture.
  • Smoking: In public you may only smoke from a minimum distance of two meters and only while standing. You are not allowed to run while smoking.

Returning from your Mallorca vacation: what applies to the return journey from the Balearic Islands to Germany?

If you want to travel back to Germany by plane after your holiday in the Balearic Islands, you need a negative corona test in order to be allowed to board the plane (there are exceptions for people who have been vaccinated, recovered and children under 6 years of age). Usually a test is possible directly at the airport, some accommodations offer the organization of tests. If the test result is positive, the quarantine must be carried out on site.
