Mexico City – Part of a subway bridge collapsed in Mexico City. According to current information, at least 15 people were killed. 34 injured people were brought to hospitals, said Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum to journalists at the scene of the accident. Several wagons on a metro line 12 train fell a few meters late on Monday evening (local time) and crashed into each other, as can be seen on videos that were spread on social media. According to Sheinbaum, part of the bridge had given way after initial findings.

Metro disaster in Mexico City

Cars had been driving under the collapsed section of the flyover at Olivos train station on the southeastern edge of the metropolis. Rescue workers first took passengers out of the hanging wagons with a ladder. Because of the unstable position of the train, the rescue work had to be interrupted, according to Sheinbaum.

Local residents reportedly denounced damage to pillars along the route of metro line 12 years ago. Accordingly, there had also been allegations of corruption in the construction of the route. In 2014, not long after the inauguration of Line 12, operations had been suspended for months for repairs. (ktho / dpa)
