Mexico's economic activity contracts in May

The economic activity of Mexico decreased 0.2% in May compared to the previous month, according to the Global Indicator of Economic Activity released this Monday.

Tertiary activities fell 0.3%, primary increased 2.2% and secondary 0.1%, compared to April, reported the National Institute of Statistics and Geography.

Previously, the Inegi projection was that the Mexican economy would have an advance of 0.1%, at a monthly rate. However, the real data on economic activity released this Monday shows a contraction of 0.2%.

In addition, for June, the Timely Indicator of Economic Activity estimates a greater contraction, of 0.4% per month. With these figures, according to the Grupo Financiero Base, the probabilities of a stagnation of the Mexican economy in the second quarter and a contraction in the third quarter of 2022 increase.

At an annual rate, economic activity advanced 1.3%, in real terms, with an advance of 3.1% in secondary activities, 3% in primary activities and 0.3% in tertiary activities.
