Michaela Jaé Rodriguez: First transgender actress with Emmy nomination

In the summer of 2021, Rodriguez made history when she became the first transgender actress to receive an Emmy nomination in a leading actress category – also for her performance as Blanca.

“Pose”, which premiered in summer 2018, focuses on New York’s queer underground African American as well as Latin American and gender-nonconforming drag ball culture. “Pose”: lamented lack of recognition of the series

Over the past few years, the “Pose” stars have been vocal about the series’ lack of recognition despite critical applause and praise for the transrepresentation.

“Trans people are not honored for a show about trans people who created a culture to honor ourselves because the world doesn’t,” tweeted Moore – who plays Angel Evangelista – in response to the show’s lack of Emmy nomination . “Let’s call it cognitive cissonance.”

At this year’s Golden Globes, “Pose” was nominated for the best TV series drama award alongside “Lupine”, “The Morning Show”, “Squid Game” and “Succession”. Billy Porter was also nominated for Best Actor for his role as Prayerful “Pray” Tell in “Pose”. (Sonja Thomaser)
