More than a quarter of the 25-year-olds lived with their parents

At 25 young people are already in the middle of life – actually. But around a quarter of them still lived in their parents’ house in 2020. Sons find it particularly difficult to move out.

Wiesbaden – More than a quarter of 25-year-olds in Germany, namely 28 percent, still lived with their parents in 2020.

Above all, the sons took a little more time to move out, as the Federal Statistical Office announced on Thursday. 35 percent of them still lived in their parents’ household, while it was only a good fifth (21 percent) of the daughters at the age of 25.

The difference between the sexes will therefore persist later. At the age of 30, 13 percent of men still lived as a single child in their parents’ household, but only six percent of women. Between the ages of 30 and 40, these proportions decrease again significantly: at 40, only four percent of men and around two percent of women lived with their parents.

There was no information on whether the corona pandemic was noticeable when staying at home – for example because of starting studies without face-to-face events or short-time work in the training company. The data came from the microcensus, which was redesigned in 2020. The results are only comparable to a limited extent with previous years, it said. dpa
