Munich: DHL branch mixes up packages – customer takes exchange with unusual action into his own hands

At a post office, an employee made an annoying mistake: he gave a package to the wrong customer. He quickly writes a letter to the owner.

Munich – Anyone who receives their parcel at the post office usually assumes that they are the right recipient. A man from Munich seems to have had a similar experience. A postal worker had handed him a package, believing it was the right thing. But the surprise came after opening: it was the wrong one. Using the contact details in the package, he was able to find the right owner and wrote her a letter. She vented her displeasure on Twitter and posted it – the Post’s reaction was not long in coming. She’s not the only one, as illustrated by this example from a disgruntled customer a few years ago.

Package mixed up: Honest finder sends a letter to the correct owner

According to the customer, the mix-up happened in a post office in downtown Munich. In his letter to the real owner, he writes that an employee there gave him a package with a name tag that had been torn off and was no longer legible. Nevertheless, the employee was “solidly convinced” that the package was intended for him. Since the man was expecting a similar package anyway, he didn’t give it any further thought. He only noticed the mix-up when he got home. The enclosed invoice then gave the customer the name of the correct owner.

Instead of returning the package to the branch and having the mistake corrected by the post office, the man took matters into his own hands. “I would be happy to bring the package to you or, if you prefer, you can pick it up from us,” he wrote to the owner of the package. To do this, he adds his mobile number so that he can coordinate better.

The error ends up on Twitter – Post responds promptly

The owner then posts the letter on Twitter with the note: “DHL branch is forcing my package on a stranger!” and links it at the same time. DHL’s reaction follows promptly. “Of course, that shouldn’t happen,” writes an employee via the official DHL account. He then offers to use the Twitter name to initiate a complaint. However, it is still unclear how this will turn out. Post offices are becoming scarcer in Munich anyway – more and more are closing. (mell)
